This golden ochre robe Buddha is seated in sharanagamana mudra. This gesture of protection is more commonly known in Tibetan art as the gesture of giving refuge, and this mudra may be made with either the right or left hand. It occurs as the common mudra of the eight manifestations of Tara and Avalokiteshvara who protect from the "eight great fears".

The circle symbolizes the taking of refuge as the union of method and wisdom and the three extended fingers represent the Three Jewels of the Buddha, dharma and sangha as the objects of refuge.

This Buddha is seated in dhyana asana, the meditative pose also called padmasana.

About Wood Lacquering & Gilding: The artisans begin this process by sizing the wood, before applying colors made with natural pigments. The pieces can be adorned with copper or gold leaf gilding. Pieces that are glossy are sanded and polished in order to give them their glossy finish. Some pieces may be lacquered, smoothed and then varnished.

This wood sculpture is a one of a kind statue, hand carved by the very talented artists of Cambodia. Every piece is truly unique!
